3. Wyrmwood

Another non-American horror movie released this month, this time from Australia, replaces the vampires with zombies while still mashing up genres. Wyrmwood blends zombie apocalypse with horror comedy with an overt nod to the Mad Max movies thrown in for good measure. No-nonsense mechanic Barry (Jay Gallagher) gets caught up in a zombie outbreak and has to fight his way across the outback to find his sister Brook (Bianca Bradey) who, unbeknownst to him, possesses a very unique zombie-controlling ability. Evil scientists and ruthless mercenaries are the only thing standing in his way. On paper Wyrmwood sounds like it could be just another mediocre horror comedy - of which there are certainly plenty - but director Kiah Roache-Turner keeps the action and jokes coming thick and fast.
