Ever since they were introduced in the Force Awakens, Rey and Kylo Ren have shared a special connection. As the trilogy expanded this seemed to grow stronger and stronger, as they could communicate through the force, and in the Rise of Skywalker they could even interact physically no matter the distance.

For a while many fans theorized the two force wielders would wind up on the same side before the end of the trilogy. The winning theory was that Kylo Ren would give in to the Skywalker in him and leave the Sith in his past, until a certain shot from the Rise of Skywalker trailer.

This scene showed Rey wielding a fancy new red lightsaber, and with fans let down by the mystery of Rey's heritage in the Last Jedi, it felt like J.J. Abrams could spring a genuine twist in the finale of the Skywalker trilogy and have the protagonist turn.

In reality, however, nothing is ever that straight forward in Star Wars, and the studio would never have put such a blatant spoiler in the trailer. Instead, the image of Sith Rey was nothing more than a vision.
