10 Problems With Harry Potter Movies That Nobody Wants To Admit
8. Quidditch Is A Really Terrible Sport
In the world of Harry Potter, Quidditch is treated with adoration from absolutely everyone who is able to wield a wand. And on the surface, at least, one might applaud J.K. Rowling for "inventing" a sport that seems genuinely plausible. Not to mention that, viewed on the big screen, it's endlessly entertaining and exciting to watch. Except Quidditch isn't plausible at all - the closer you look at it, the more ridiculous it seems in both concept and execution. As a sort of hodgepodge between basketball and swing-ball and countless other sports, Quidditch requires its players to fly around on broomsticks trying to throw a ball through one of three hoops whilst avoiding being knocked off by other, more dangerous balls. Whilst that goes on, one player - the Seeker - must attempt to capture the "Snitch." When that happens, the game ends and the team with the Snitch are awarded 150 points. Which means that, essentially, the team whose Seeker captures the Snitch almost always wins, given that you only score 10 points for a regular "goal" and it takes ages to get anywhere near 150 points. So, essentially, Quidditch comes down to the actions of one player - the Seeker. So what exactly is the point of the rest of the game, really?
