10 Psychedelic Horror Movies That Mess With Your Brain

8. Possession

Bliss 2019

Despite being nominated for the prestigious Palm D'Or at Cannes Film Festival and earning actor Isabelle Adjani a best actress award, Andrej Zulawski's Possession nevertheless found itself classified as a "Video Nasty", only being released in the UK in 2000, almost 20 years after its festival debut.

Brimming with plenty of some seriously disturbing imagery, it's no surprise why it's been simultaneously adored and revered. One particular scene where Adjani shrieks uncontrollably in a subway tunnel is a prime example of the uncompromising nature of Possession's uncomfortable tone.

The plot follows Anna (Adjani), who begins to exhibit increasingly erratic behaviour. As events grow ever weirder and a horrific creature is discovered in Anna's apartment (a creature that was designed Carlo Rambaldi, who also designed E.T), understanding what's going on only becomes more challenging.

While Possession may not be as hyper-stylised as some of the other entries on this list, what it lacks in pulpy style is more than made up for with its hypnotic intensity and its unapologetic commitment to its presentation.

When the director describes the film as being about a woman who has sex with an octopus, you know you're in for a wild ride.
