10 Psychedelic Horror Movies That Mess With Your Brain
7. Suspiria (1977)
A definitive classic of cult and giallo cinema, Suspiria reigns as a firm favourite among horror fans today.
Helmeed by the legendary Dario Argento, the film sees American ballet dancer Suzy (Jessica Harper, who had a cameo in the 2018 re-imagination of the film) arrive at the renowned Freiburg Dance Academy in Berlin. After a series of brutal murders, however, Suzy begins to realise there's something insidious happening in the academy Specifically, it's run by a coven of witches.
One of the last films ever to be processed in Technicolor, Suspiria takes on a nightmarish, surrealist atmosphere through the use of bold, eye-popping colours that dominate entire sequences. Combine this with the unrelenting score performed by Italian prog-rock band Goblin consisting of whispers, gibberish, and frenzied tones - which Argento famously played on set to unnerve the actors - and you have horror cinema at its very finest.
Throw in the childlike language and the head-high doorknobs to make the characters seem a lot younger (they were originally supposed to be under 12), and you have a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
Suspiria is best enjoyed on the biggest screen possible with the sound up as loud as you can handle.
