10 Psychedelic Horror Movies That Mess With Your Brain
6. Midsommar
The second feature from acclaimed horror newcomer Ari Aster, Midsommar takes the horror away from the dark household of a grief-stricken family in Hereditary and shifts it to an idyllic Swedish countryside. Described as an "apocalyptic breakup movie" by Aster, Midsommar may be a different vein of horror than Hereditary, but it's just as frightening and even more twisted.
After suffering a traumatic event, Dani (Florence Pugh) embarks on a trip to visit an isolated Swedish community with her boyfriend Christian (Jack Raynor) and friends to witness a rare midsummer festival. With Dani and Christian's relationship already nearing breaking point, events only become worse for the group when they uncover the true nature of the festivities.
Playing out like a fever dream that only gets more intense as the film makes its way to its horrific yet cathartic climax, Midsommar is one of those rare films that, as events progress, manages to crawl right under your skin to an unnerving effect.
Containing arguably the strangest sex scene ever put on film, there's plenty of drug-induced insanity to be witnessed here. Supported by an awe-inspiring performance by Pugh, Midsommar is easily one of the best horror films in recent years.
