10 Questionable Criticisms Of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice

6. Lex Luthor’s Motivations

The Criticism: Lex Luthor’s evil plans didn’t make a whole lot of sense. The most reasonable thing he wanted to do was destroy Superman, and his logic for that was basically that he wanted to prove God wasn’t real.

Things only got murkier from there, as he seemingly also wanted Batman killed only to make Superman look bad. Finally, his masterstroke to stop that all-powerful alien whose motives he distrusted was to unleash a much more reckless alien monster, without any semblance of morality and far more dangerous than the being he’’s trying to stop.

Why It’s Questionable: Zack Snyder may have actually provided us the answer already via a deleted scene. Titled ‘Communion,’ the scene shows Lex being apprehended in Zod’s ship, but not before we see him speaking with Darekseid's lieutenant Steppenwolf via hologram - he’s been communicated with an advanced alien general whose ruler wants nothing more to come and eradicate Earth. That’s enough to drive a man to the brink.

The fear of an alien invasion causing him to lose his sanity isn’t really explained in the actual movie, with only the final scene gives us any insight into why his goals were so convoluted, but with the proper explanation they do make more sense. It's just a shame that explanation had to come from outside of the film itself.
