10 Questions You Should Be Asking About Upcoming Movies
7. Where's The Split Going To Occur? - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1
After two films that followed the same basic model (poverty, opulence, training, area fight, victory in the most rule-breaking way possible), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay promises a very distinct change of place. No longer working in a totalitarian state, Katniss and the eclectic cast she's met are going to be leading a revolution to bring down the dystopian society of Panem. In the grand tradition of young adult adaptations, this final part of the story is going to be split in two because, in case you hadn't noticed, the studios freaking love money. Although unlike Harry Potter (which lost all narrative drive) and Twilight (which forced in an incredibly elaborate dream sequence just to pad it out), there's something of a genuine reason behind it this time. We're not buying into director's Francis Lawrence pleadings that it's a creative choice, but it may not hamper the finale of The Hunger Games in the same way it has other franchises. Mockingjay the novel, being a distinct change of direction, ends up rushing through its plot with nary time for Katniss to catch her breath, meaning taking the story more slowly may help it feel more consistent. Of course, splitting brings that old problem of deciding where to make the divide. Quite where that will be we don't know, but after the knock-out punch of Catching Fire it'll need to be something epic.
