10 Random Films That Are REALLY Popular In Certain Countries
7. Mamma Mia - United Kingdom
Mamma Mia tells the story of... well, it doesn't really matter actually. If you love ABBA, you probably saw it, regardless of the plot. With an all-star cast, including Meryl Streep, Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, and Dame Julie Walters, it sounded like Mamma Mia! would be a blast.
But the musical adaptation failed in the most crucial department - music. Even though the story is threadbare, viewers took umbrage with the actors' singing (or lack of). Pierce Brosnan is so blatantly tone deaf, you can tell he was only cast for his star power.
But not only did Mamma Mia! recoup ten times its budget, it became the most successful feature in the history of the United Kingdom. More impressively, it was the first film in the country to make more money than Titanic. Brits flocked to see Mamma Mia! upon its release, even though the Pixar masterpiece, WALL-E, came out around the same time.
Mamma Mia! may have been outperformed by a dozen films since but it's still hard to comprehend a musical based on a Swedish pop group made slightly less money in the UK than Avengers: Infinity War.
