10 Random Films That Are REALLY Popular In Certain Countries

6. Warcraft - China

Warcraft movie
Legendary Pictures/Blizzard

Because of World of Warcraft's deep lore and dedicated fanbase, a film adaptation based on Blizzard's biggest title sounded like a golden opportunity. With Duncan Jones in the director's chair, fresh off the success of Moon and Source Code, it looked liked the potential moneymaker was in safe hands.

But like almost every video game adaptation, the film was met with poor reviews. It never reached #1 in the United States and suffered a 70% drop by its second weekend.

Even though the fantasy epic was hailed as a "dud", it did well overseas, especially in China. In the US, Warcraft made $24 million in its opening weekend. In China, it earned $156 million in the same timeframe! Not only that, Warcraft is one of the only films in history to earn $100 million in China without making that much in the US. Despite many sources referring to Warcraft as a "failure", it earned nearly half a billion dollars worldwide.

Although there's been many lucrative video game adaptations recently like Detective Pikachu, Uncharted, and Sonic the Hedgehog, Warcraft is the most successful one ever made, and it's all thanks to China.
