The Battle at Lake Changjin centres around a group of Chinese soldiers battling a North Korean squad at the Chosin Reservoir, which was a turning point in The Korean War. Despite the fact the story revolves around a monumentally historic moment in China, it's likely you never heard of the film since it had a limited release outside of Asia.

But that didn't stop The Battle at Lake Changjin from becoming the biggest movie in Chinese history. At first, this may not sound like a big surprise. Since the story revolves around one of China's biggest war conflicts, it was obviously going to be a smash hit in its native land.

But Lake Changjin didn't just do "well". Apart from Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was the most successful film of 2021... anywhere on Earth. It annihilated F9 at the box office. It made double what Shang Chi made. It even trumped James Bond's latest outing, No Time to Die.

Considering Lake Changjin was released during the pandemic and was the most expensive Chinese film ever, with a budget of $200 million, it could've easily tanked. Instead, it grossed $913 million worldwide, making it the most successful non-English film of all time.
