1. Sam Mendes’ Direction

The final point is Mendes’ masterful direction as it was his idea to tell the story in real time, meaning 1917 can therefore be seen to overlap significantly with theatre. This, combined with the fact that entire premise for the film originated from stories his grandfather told him when he was young, 1917 can be can be seen as the ideal film for Mendes to direct.

Mendes executes his vision beautifully and brings the very best out of all those he works with, acting as the glue that holds the production together.

The one-shot element I have previously mentioned was also originally suggested by Mendes and is executed in a truly astounding way. While on paper it may appear to be a style over substance decision, in practice nothing can be further from the truth. If anything, it is crucial to the film’s success, as without it, the film would be nowhere near as tension filled and impactful.

Through his direction, combined with the other elements mentioned on this list, Sam Mendes has created a true milestone of cinema with 1917. Not only does it match the great war films of the past, it is truly deserving of winning Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards.
