10 Reasons 1917 Should Win Best Picture At The Oscars 2020
4. The Immersion
In 1917, you feel totally submerged in the world that has been created and this again, is due in large part to the films one shot nature. By keeping the camera largely at ground level the viewer is planted right in the middle of the action, making them feel as if they are actually there.
It’s done so effectively that you feel the icy water Schofield jumps into, and every time there’s an explosion; you jump out your seat for fear of getting hit by shrapnel. You become so immersed that by the end of the film you feel genuinely exhausted. You need to stay sat down for a few minutes just to catch your breath.
No other nominee for Best Picture gives the viewer this sensation, no matter what, when watching them you are still aware of the separation between film and reality. But in 1917, for 2 hours, you genuinely forget where you are.
