Like a British Tarantino, Edgar Wright is a director who’s grown up engrossed in cinema and he takes a lot of inspiration from his favourite movies. Shaun of the Dead was a love letter to Romero, Hot Fuzz to the likes of Bad Boys, and The World’s End to all sorts of alien invasion movies.

Baby Driver is his attempt at making a crime movie, and he’s claimed that his main inspirations this time around include Heat, Reservoir Dogs, and Point Break. He’s also drawn on classic car chase movies including The Driver and The French Connection.

This isn’t a parody of those movies, á la the Cornetto trilogy, though; it’s a played-straight Edgar Wright version of the genre. It may be a departure in tone but it’ll nonetheless be a stylish homage, and if it can be half as good as the movies he quotes, it’ll be a hell of a ride.
