10 Reasons Bob Orci Directing Star Trek 3 Is The Dumbest Decision Ever

10. Star Trek's 50th Anniversary Deserved Better

In 2016, Star Trek will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Being a milestone year, Paramount and CBS will undoubtedly have plans to mark the 50th anniversary in spectacular style and Star Trek 3 has been penciled in to be released as part of the celebrations that summer. While €˜Star Trek 2009€™ was considered a success with audiences and critics who were prepared to overlook the film€™s problems, the follow-up €˜Star Trek Into Darkness€™ received a much harder time. Bad writing and unnecessary shoehorning of homage€™s to €˜The Wrath Of Khan€™ relegated €˜Star Trek Into Darkness€™ as one of the worst films in the franchise. So the pressure is on to make sure Star Trek 3 is received much more positively, but with Bob Orci still scripting and now directing the film, the signs are not looking good. When Star Trek was 25 years old in 1991, Paramount made sure the event was marked in the right way. They released €˜Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country€™ to not only give the Original Series crew the send off they deserved but also to make up for the way they dropped the ball with the William Shatner-directed €˜Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.€™ They learnt from their mistakes and brought brought back 'The Wrath Of Khan' director Nicholas Meyer to make sure the film had the best chance of hitting the right notes. €˜Star Trek VI€™ is regarded as one of the better Star Trek movies. Fast forward to the 50th Anniversary and not only will Star Trek 3 continue to be overseen by the team that failed to unite the fan base with their previous Star Trek adventures, they have now also failed to capitalise on the opportunity presented by JJ Abrams' departure to bring in a director that could have given the rebooted universe a fresh perspective. With no Star Trek television series seemingly on the horizon any time soon, the third movie is under pressure to show Star Trek at its best and be a financial and critical success. However, the way things stand now, we are destined to have a film that repeats the mistakes of the previous two movies and further split the fan base. Happy Anniversary? Maybe not.
