Outside of outliers like Christopher Nolan's recent Interstellar and Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, Hollywood seems intent on only producing tried-and-true properties. Studios increasingly refuse to shill out the big bucks for anything thats not a franchise with a proven track record. As major studios grow more and more gun-shy about taking a gamble on original ideas, the number of comic book adaptations will increase. Looking at current box office receipts, it's hard to blame Hollywood for not taking risks. The Marvel adaptation Big Hero Six is handily beating Nolan's latest mind-bender both critically and commercially. Hollywoods reliance on franchises doesn't necessarily spell the end of Hollywood, or, creative, artistic moviemaking. Cinema remains the home for large-scale, inventive entertainment. Superhero movies possess such a potent ability to speak to audiences worldwide that we believe the genre will never truly fade out of existence. It's inevitable that the total domination of superheroes at the box office will come to an end. New fads will capture the publics attention, but this won't happen for quite some time. It seems unlikely that the super hero genre will be a flash in the pan. As long as big screens exist, a summer wont go by without at least a couple superhero movies playing at the multiplexes.
