3. The Sound Mixing Sucks
Nolan's movies are also frequently taken to cast for their soupy sound mixing, in which dialogue is drowned out by Hans Zimmer's score and other elements of the soundscape. Though most of the critics complaining about this for Interstellar did acknowledge that the IMAX mix may have been the problem, given that this has been an issue in Nolan's other films outside of IMAX screenings, it's safe to say it's probably going to be a problem for regular multiplexes too. Given how much The Dark Knight was criticsed for the bombastic score overpowering the dialogue (especially during Gordon's final monologue), and the fuss with Bane's voice having to be re-dubbed for The Dark Knight Rises, it's infuriating that Nolan continues to release messy sound mixes, especially when they only dilute the meaning of the film if audiences can't even hear the dialogue. The Guardian: "The soundtrack thunders all over the dialogue." The Wrap: "Nolan also seemingly can't help himself from drowning out many of the dialogue scenes with ribcage-jiggling bass notes from pipe organs and string sections." Awards Circuit: "The sound was so overbearing at times that it drowned out the dialogue being spoken...One instance in particular I felt key things were revealed that I missed due to the loud nature." The Movie Minute: "Several key passages are drowned out by an audio track gone rogue." The Hollywood Reporter: " sometimes domineering." IGN: "The sound mix is problematic in that key moments of dialogue are muffled." Topless Robot: "The sound mix does sacrifice a lot of dialogue clarity."
