10 Reasons Guardians Of The Galaxy Might Fail

2. It Might Be Too "Weird" For Mainstream Audiences

One of the main problems with all this considered is that, no matter how careful Marvel might market the movie, the whole concept just might be too weird for cinemagoers to latch onto. After all, the comic book never really breaking out of its niche while other Marvel properties soared to massive popularity would be a fair indication of that (even if many of them are decades older than Guardians). It's easy to see why characters like Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor are so popular: they are easily identifiable and have simple, memorable names, whereas audiences are by and large going to have to get used to the characters in Guardians. With all of the outlandish make-up effects and insane CGI the film has (which never hurt Thor, remember), the film needs to relate to its audience as much as possible: for as weird as it is most likely going to be, it needs to be the right kind of weird, both funny and kick-a** at the same time. It's an extremely subtle tone to strike, one that's even harder to explain, all the more considering how fickle casual movie audiences can be. Given how often "weird" is used as a derogatory descriptor among people, the movie's charm really needs to be pushed above all else.
