10 Reasons John Stewart Needs To Be The Cinematic Green Lantern

4. Diversity In The Justice League

When the New 52 debuted, one of the biggest changes was Cyborg’s membership in the Justice League, replacing the long-standing Martian Manhunter. As a former member of the Teen Titans, character-wise, the move didn’t make much sense, but there was a very obvious reason why it was done: racial diversity.

The change was not well-received, but it’s still happening again in the cinematic Justice League. However, there’s an easier solution to make things a little more representative: replace the white Hal Jordan with the black John Stewart. It would make Cyborg’s role as the token black character less obvious, especially since his problems are less centred on race and more on being a robot.

Race makes up a large tenant of Stewart’s identity, and if they’re going to include an African-American superhero just for the sake of having one, they’re better off taking the established character, who has actually been a member of the League. It’s not like they can’t have two black superheroes on the same team.
