10 Reasons Metallica's Through The Never Will Rip Your Face Off

5. The Cunning Stunts Homage

Kirk In 1997 the band recorded a live DVD named 'Cunning Stunts'. Brilliant name I'm sure you'll agree, just don't ask your nan to grab a copy down HMV. Anyway, the titular stunt in question involved taking a team of stuntmen to replace some crowd members and act out something of a stage invasion late in the gig during Enter Sandman. Dividing to conquer, to the thousands in attendance it looked like a couple of crowd members had clambered up the side of some of the staging, as well as getting themselves up into the rafters high above the stage. Obviously the band were in on the idea, but cut to the middle section of Sandman kicking in and all hell broke loose. Stuntmen fell convincingly, bringing down all the staging around the band, James Hetfield curses and exclaims that he doesn't know whats happening, and there's even a man who gets caught on fire and runs, arms flailing across the stage before being extinguished. The band eventually plug some of their equipment back in and play amongst what's left, creating such an extremely memorable experience it even made the local news at the time with many believing the entire event was genuine. Now, with Through The Never being a celebration of the best parts of Metallica, there's a full recreation of this idea in the film, complete with collapsed staging and people being stretchered off. Take someone along who has no prior knowledge that this is coming, and thoroughly enjoy being in on the joke yourself.
