10 Reasons Miles Morales Shouldn't Be Spider-Man In Civil War

4. Diversity For The Sake Of Diversity

There's absolutely no denying the fact that superhero movies need more diversity. Though it upsets some fans, the fact that a lot of characters have their races changed (take Iris West in The Flash's TV series or Perry White in Man of Steel) is a good thing because it more accurately represents today's multicultural world. Don't forget that most comic book characters were created at a time when a series with a black lead would not have sold. One needs only to look at the positive reaction that the announcements of movies for characters like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Wonder Woman received (Cyborg was more of a, "Really?") to see what fans what, and more and more comic books are reflecting that. However, there's a huge difference between that sort of positive diversity and just switching things up for the sake of it in order to generate positive headlines. Making Miles Morales Spider-Man would generate some initially positive buzz with the people who write for the trades and have never picked up a comic book in their lives, but is picking a character like Miles the best thing for the movie itself? No, for the very reasons laid out in this feature. Marvel and Sony could pat themselves on the back for meeting some diversity quotas, but what happens when their audience realises just how boring Miles is?
