10 Reasons The Emperor’s New Groove Is The Best Disney Movie

3. A Compelling Arc For Its Protagonist

Disney had a tried-and-true formula when it comes to most of the heroes. They€™re typically pretty good people who might have a singular character flaw or some misgivings about their situation only to go on a journey that helps them realize how good they have it and attain some modicum of improvement to their lives. Kuzco is not that standard character, and its pretty much the furthest thing from a hero that Disney has ever attempted to craft into a protagonist. He€™s extremely arrogant, has no empathy for anyone and is all-around very unlikable. His character could easily be the villain in a number of other Disney films. We're talking about a guy who opens the film by literally having an old man thrown out of his palace for bumping into him! And yet, that lack of redeeming qualities is what makes him such a fascinating lead character. He journey is so different from the typical Disney hero and his humbling transformation into a llama and journey with Pacha actually changes him in a very meaningful way. This isn€™t about gaining confidence so a prince will notice him, it€™s about seeing the many flaws in his character and trying his best to make up for them, something scarcely seen in a film like this.
