10 Reasons The Marvel Cinematic Universe Is Doomed To Fail

9. Every Movie Has To Consider What's Going On Elsewhere

One of the inherent problems with creating an expanded universe is that audiences become just as concerned with what's going on elsewhere as they do in the actual movie. They want to know what's happening to the characters off-screen, and how the events in other installments are affecting the current one. Though it's easy to say, "Come on, guys - just enjoy the movie you're watching now," you can't really blame fans for feeling this way. After all, isn't the point of having a cinematic universe so that you can show cause and effect in different films? Unfortunately, as the universe gets bigger, more characters are added, and the stakes become higher; trying to cram everything you need to say into one movie is becoming more and more difficult. This was made recently apparent in the otherwise impressive Captain America: The Winter Soldier; not only did the movie have to have its own standalone plot, but it had to give screen time to reoccurring supporting characters, address the events of the previous movie, and address future movies, too. And given the speed of expansion, it can only get worse.
