10 Reasons Why 2013 Is A Seminal Year For Sci-Fi Films

7. Oblivion

Oblivion Tom Cruise plays a drone repairman assigned to Earth, one of the last two humans on the planet whose surface has been devastated by a brutal war against an alien race. On a routine checkup he discovers the remains of a crashed spacecraft that throws into question everything he thought he knew about the war. Why We Are Excited: The trailer for the film gives us a good sense of the style and scale of the project, and so far, things look fairly promising. Tom Cruise is always reliable (despite his many detractors, I still think he's a fantastic actor and a true screen presence), and the mysteries and secrets hiding in the trailer leave us wanting to know more. Director Joseph Kosinski wowed us with his brilliant, stylized, unique vision in TRON: Legacy a few years ago, though that film's script left something to be desired. However, this time around he is helped by Michael Arndt of Toy Story 3 and Star Wars: Episode VII, and the Sci-Fi elements in this film seem far more grounded in reality and practical effects than TRON: Legacy's blue screen environments.
