10 Reasons Why 2013 Is A Seminal Year For Sci-Fi Films

5. Star Trek Into Darkness

StarTrek When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Why We Are Excited: J. J. Abrams can officially be crowned King of the Geeks now that he has conquered two of the most famous and lucrative Sci-Fi properties out there. But before he sets off to a galaxy far, far away, Abrams is returning to the film that got him the Star Wars gig in the first place. The first of Abrams' Star Trek films was a majorly pleasant surprise, delivering all the thrills and excitement expected from a Sci-Fi epic but injecting it with a really distinct and unique sense of humor, style, and energy. Here's hoping that Abrams continues down the same road with this sequel, aided this time by what will hopefully be a star-making role for Benedict Cumberbatch as the definitely-not-but-maybe-actually-Khan villain.
