It’s a miracle Argus Filch ever managed to get a job at Hogwarts. As the caretaker, he prowls the corridors with his cat (Mrs Norris) and is constantly on the lookout for anyone who might befoul his precious castle.

He possesses a sadistic love of punishment and openly confesses his disappointment that he isn’t allowed to hang students by their thumbs in the dungeons. Indeed, under Umbridge’s regime, he was given permission to whip Fred and George. He was only prevented from doing so because the twins managed to escape before he could get his hands on them.

What’s more, his knowledge of the secret passageways is extensive. He can crop up at any time and catch troublemakers when they least expect it.

Though he was prevented from performing violent punishments under Dumbledore, a future headmaster or headmistress may not be so lenient.
