10 Reasons Why Star Trek: First Contact Ruined the Borg

4. Starfleet Inefficiency

Since the encounter at system J25 in "Q Who" and the events in "The Best of Both Worlds", it seems that Starfleet has actually cut corners in the areas of security and detection---perhaps their defense budget was cut? Then again if they don€™t use money what budget would they need to cut? At any rate, the Borg manage to take over the Enterprise-E virtually undetected assimilating many crew members in the process. Given established Star Trek lore regarding the Borg (which I€™ve already pointed out this film basically ignores) it stands to reason that if a crew member was trapped by a Borg, or in the beginning stages of assimilation, they would have had time to alert the bridge with their communicator. Leaving that aside, however, what about the ship board sensors? Throughout seven seasons of the television series, the bridge was always alerted to the sudden appearance of an alien presence anywhere on the ship. Was the Enterprise-E that much of an inferior ship to her predecessor that internal sensors and backup security systems were not included in her design? This is another contrived and unbelievable plot device in this film.
