10 Reasons Why Star Trek: First Contact Ruined the Borg

3. The Defiant

After the battle of Wolf 359 Starfleet Commander Shelby transferred from the Enterprise-D as first officer to a new position more befitting her expertise on the Borg; taking a position leading Starfleet€™s reconstruction of its fleet with a focus on creating ships that can hold up against the Borg. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine we are introduced to the fruits of their labor---The Defiant---a ship assigned to newly promoted Captain Sisko at the start of the Dominion War; a ship that was built as part of Shelby€™s task force of €œBorg Proofed€ ships. Yet, at the beginning of First Contact when Worf takes the Defiant up against a Borg cube the ship is disabled and useless very early in the battle. Did Starfleet build such a bad ship, or was Worf that bad of a Captain? Perhaps since it was left €œadrift but salvageable€ Starfleet focused their efforts on building ships that could only €œsurvive€ a Borg attack rather than repel one? Either way, the Defiant is not nearly the €œtough little ship€ we have been led to believe she is. After all she crashes and is rebuilt more times than Red Dwarf€™s Starbug.
