10 Reasons You're Wrong About Avatar

9. Jake Sully Is Supposed To Be A Blank Slate

Avatar Jake Neytiri

Remember Sam Worthington? While nobody expected him to be winning any Oscars after his fairly workmanlike performance in Avatar as protagonist Jake Sully, that is ultimately exactly what the movie required.

Much like Keanu Reeves' Neo in The Matrix, Sully is effectively a blank slate, an understated self-insert for the audience to project themselves onto throughout the adventure.

While his recently-deceased brother was the genius with a PhD, Jake is our "in" to Pandora, proving how everybody and anybody can lose themselves in this world.

Again like Neo, Jake has a clearly-drawn arc which, while predictable, easily allows the audience to identify with him along his journey. Much like the plot, he's not particularly complex or animated, and that's honestly exactly what the movie needs.

After all, the movie isn't about Jake: it's about Pandora.
