5. 2 Hour Music Videos
Yes, Zack Snyder started out his career directing music videos. Should it be a concern when talking about the films he's directed? No. But that's going with the assumption that all of his movies aren't just two hour long music videos. Don't believe me? Here are a few key points of music videos and how they connect with what Snyder has done. They have music in them. All movies have music in them. But not the way Snyder does music. Sucker Punch was basically a CD with visuals. You hear the full song nearly every time. The action is incredibly pointless but is touted as a metaphor. Straightforward music videos just don't seem to fly any more; and Snyder has taken that idea and applied it to his directing. Why worry about plot and character development when you can just have a random monster fight? Despite all the insanity going on, we still get glimpses of the singer. Or in Snyder's case, the narrator. It happened in 300(that voiceover), Watchmen(Rorschach), and the most grievous offender, Sucker Punch (fantasy then back to sexually deranged psycho ward). Snyder can't develop characters. Whilst it helps that both Bruce and Clark have previous movies for him to build on, it's hard to see him developing a strong reason for them to fight. Instead, he will most likely show a Batman Vs. Superman to the entirety of a My Chemical Romance album.
