10 Reboots/Sequels That Didn't Know Why The Originals Were Popular
3. Batman & Robin
Batman Returns is marked by the idea of multiple villains collaborating to defeat the hero. It is a concept that worked once or twice and has been beaten to death like it's Jason Todd. Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Danny DeVito are all talented actors and they play their parts brilliantly, but it was their skill and success that led to comic book movies being filled to the brim with villains.
Several antagonists only work when the cast is good, and the balance between characters is better. Still, Joel Schumacher and Warner Bros. decided there was more money in ridiculous performances and too many villains than making a quality film, so they produced the passable Batman Forever and the garbage Batman & Robin.
Batman & Robin has three villains, and all border on crimes against humanity. Uma Thurman and Arnold Schwartzenegger at least try to lean into the crash, but there was no saving it. As a movie, it goes out of its way to unknowingly parody what we liked about the evil team up in Batman Returns. Fortunately, it was condemned across nearly every critical and fan demographic, leading to the cancellation of a fifth installment starring Nicolas Cage as the Scarecrow.
