British director Benjamin Barfoot is no newcomer to the horror scene, having last crossed our screens with date night comedy horror Double Date in 2017, and while he has been fairly quiet in the intervening years, he struck whatever the horror equivalent of gold is last year with Daddy’s Head.

This supernatural chiller touches down in the life of Isaac (Rupert Turnbull), whose dead mother origin story is compounded by the loss of his architect father James (Charles Aitken) in a road collision. Left alone with his much-loathed stepmother Laura (Julia Brown) in their isolated home in the woods, we can all guess what’s coming next - except it doesn’t.

Daddy’s Head sprints off left-field as a creepy, lumbering creature emerges from the woods and stalks the micro-family, sporting what appears to be James’ head and features. Taking a leaf out of Hatching’s (2022) book, the film suggests that this new apparition is deeply connected to Isaac’s emotions and grief, managing to load the action and drama with an extra layer of meaning while keeping us guessing just how real it all is. But, more than anything, the truly horrific visual details are what make the film, and what make it worth watching.
