10 Recent Horror Movies That Had No Right To Be This Good
3. M3GAN
That PG-13 killer doll horror comedy that became a meme turned out to be a sleekly executed, devilishly entertaining romp - would you Adam and Eve it?
Prior to its release, M3GAN looked like a goofy Child's Play rip-off, and also, it's produced by Blumhouse. Their output has always been wildly inconsistent, and in recent years, they've increasingly devolved into a schlock factory. But no, M3GAN is actually kind of awesome.
M3GAN's a deliciously campy horror comedy that nails exactly the right tone. It provides glorious laughs and wacky set-pieces, yet it never goes overboard with the silliness, and there's some gentle character development for its protagonist (Allison Williams) that prevents the picture from feeling too throwaway.
The PG-13 rating was unfortunate, but M3GAN compensates many times over with its wit and creativity. It also gave us the glorious spectacle of an evil doll singing David Guetta and Sia's Titanium as a lullaby, which is something we never knew we needed.
The recent sequel, M3GAN 2.0, which switched genres and became an action-comedy, was a flop, but the original film holds up well on its own terms and is definitely worth seeing.
