The "we have A Quiet Place at home" vibes were certainly strong with Arcadian - a post-apocalyptic sci-fi horror flick in which a father (Nicolas Cage) tries to survive alongside his two teenage sons (Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins).

Between the rather unremarkable marketing campaign and the fact that the film was quietly dumped in cinemas for a few weeks before being listlessly sloughed onto streaming, there was good reason to be skeptical of this one.

And while Arcadian certainly lacks the technical polish of A Quiet Place, it is a laudably low-key genre effort that places more emphasis on its character dynamics than the terrifying creatures in their midst.

But the monsters themselves boast a discomfortingly unique design that, believe it or not, was actually inspired by Disney's Goofy. As insane as that sounds, it really works.

Arcadian isn't a thrill-a-minute romp, but it's also a far cry from the also-ran apocalyptic horror joint it sold itself as.
