10 Recent Horror Movies That Had No Right To Be This Good

1. Your Monster

Not entirely unlike Heart Eyes, Your Monster attempted an unwieldy fusion of horror and rom-com, with Melissa Barrera starring as a young woman who discovers a monster (Tommy Dewey) living in her house.

Even with solid reviews coming out of its Sundance premiere, the trailers didn't do a terribly good job of emphasising the movie's strengths - namely, Barrera's superb performance.

On top of this, there's the fact that it failed to secure a major distributor despite the involvement of Scream star Barrera, with Vertical Entertainment ultimately quietly sending it into a few-hundred cinemas for a couple of weeks before chucking it on streaming with little fanfare.

But Your Monster is actually a blast - a witty, tonally nimble horror-comedy that gives Barrera the stage to deliver the finest performance of her career to date.

And yet, considering how low-key its release ultimately was, you couldn't be blamed for assuming that it was a bit of a bust.
