Now to be clear, "good" might be a slightly relative term here, but even so, who expected Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare to be anything more than white hot trash?

The latest entry into the "Poohniverse" - kickstarted by Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and its sequel - marks the filmmakers' ongoing efforts to adapt popular childhood characters which have recently entered the public domain into unhinged slasher films.

Even accepting that Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 was a solid step up from its predecessor, was anyone expecting much from this reimagining of Peter Pan as a homicidal maniac?

As a one-note joke that's seemingly already totally played out, it screams cynicism from every pore, and yet, Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare ultimately landed a not-bad 48% on the Tomatometer - a frankly miraculous score for something so clearly tailor-made for critical scorn.

This makes it the best-reviewed of the three Poohniverse movies to date, and hell, it even got a solid write-up from Variety, who praised its eerie atmosphere and squicky violence.

Overall, there was genuine surprise among critics that the cast and crew clearly took the assignment seriously, no matter how ridiculous it was, and didn't merely curl out a zero-effort cash-in for a quick buck.

Who knows - perhaps a future Poohniverse movie might even end up with a Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
