8. The First Omen

Don't Move
20th Century Studios

Even though The Omen is iconic, the brand hasn't been great since... well... The Omen. But after watching The First Omen's introduction, it was obvious the supernatural prequel was in the right hands.

The story starts in Rome, with Father Brennan (who featured in the original) exiting a church. While in an erratic state, he implores his superior, Father Harris, to divulge any information he has about an occult conspiracy. In a defeated tone, Harris says he "wants it all to be over", almost like he knows his days are numbered.

Before Brennan can learn anything else, their conversation is interrupted by a crash above. Instead of showing the source of the sound straight away, the camera lingers on Harris' surprisingly calm face, while chunks of glass rain down on him.

As Brennan looks above, he sees a pipe has smashed through a window, causing shards to plummet below. Though it's evident what's about to happen, the slow-motion and hair-raising music create a sense of dread, making the outcome more impactful.

Although Harris seems unharmed, Brennan blesses himself when he sees the back of his superior's head. Harris turns from the camera, revealing his skull has been split open by the debris.

Not only is this a creative death and a gripping way to start the story, it's a great homage to how Brennan met his maker in the original.
