3. The Innocents

Don't Move
IFC Midnight

Although Chronicle and The New Mutants put a dark spin on the "kids get superpowers" trope, neither pushed the concept as far as The Innocents.

In this Norwegian drama, a young girl, Ida, moves to a new area where she encounters a strange boy called Ben. The two reveal to each other that they have superpowers, creating a deep bond. But with little adult supervision or guidance, it isn't long before the children misuse their abilities, leading to tragedy.

The Innocents isn't outright disturbing straight away, but the eerie sounds and sense of dread are apparent early on, indicating this isn't going to be a traditional superhero tale.

Ben seems harmless at first, but Ida realises something is very wrong with him after seeing her new friend drop a cat from a staircase. This scene is distressing but necessary to establish that this story isn't holding back. The scene also serves as a warning for the squeamish to check out if scenes like this rattle them. But if viewers decide to press on, they need to understand this is but a taste of what's to come.
