Don't Move
Netflix

Produced by Sam Raimi, Don't Move begins with a grieving mother, Iris, driving to a cliff edge, ready to take her life. Rather than relying on an exposition dump, the scene utilises visual storytelling to convey Iris' inner turmoil.

Just as she's about to jump, a mysterious man, Richard, appears out of nowhere and strikes up a conversation. Even though she's unwilling to listen at first, Richard does all he can to talk her down, indicating he's profoundly compassionate and caring.

Swayed by his words, Iris agrees to let Richard walk her back to the car park. With little warning, Richard tasers Iris before injecting her with a paralytic agent.

Though we've only been briefly introduced to Iris, we're invested in her straight off the bat. Although the troubled protagonist was set on suicide, she decides to live on moments before her life is threatened. The fact that Iris was inspired to live by the very person who was planning on killing her demonstrates a creative irony within the first scene.

What's worse is that Iris has to escape from her kidnapper while being unable to move, creating a uniquely terrifying situation.
