10 Recent Horror Movies That Surprised EVERYONE
8. The Ritual
While few were expecting great things from the new Al Pacino and Dan Stevens-starring exorcism film The Ritual considering how little it's been marketed, few could've expected it would settle as low as 7% on Rotten Tomatoes.
But the big surprise isn't that The Ritual is rubbish, rather that for a horror movie starring Pacino - an actor known above all else for Going Big and selling his roles for the cheap seats - it's weirdly boring.
Even ignoring the inherently dull narrative and whatever script, the big shocker here is that Pacino totally underplays the role of Father Theophilus Riesinger - a German-American priest-slash-exorcist and a part which seemingly provided Pacino with endless ammunition for a scenery-devouring performance.
But Pacino bizarrely decides to play his role totally straight - a decision which might be interesting, even laudable, if the script was doing anything even remotely noteworthy.
Instead Pacino's choice only makes this dreadfully tedious film even more of a slog to get through, because you can't even have fun with a wildly bonkers, off-the-wall Pacino performance.
