10 Recent Horror Movies That Surprised EVERYONE
7. Presence
Steven Soderbergh's Presence wasn't quite the film that many were expecting.
Though marketed as an out-and-out haunted house horror film, so much of Soderbergh's low-budget experiment is really more of an emotionally charged family drama with a supernatural fringe.
The horror aspects certainly pay off later, though the trailers were clearly cut to evoke far more of a found footage vibe, no matter that the film merely unfolds from the POV of a ghost with no technological gimmicks.
But the bigger and more interesting surprises come later in the story, especially when we find out who the villain of the piece is and, more to the point, the identity of the ghost observing the family.
We won't give it away here in case you haven't seen Presence yet, but by the time its final scene plays out, you'll likely be wanting to rewatch the entire movie with the knowledge of its startling closing revelation.
