10 Recent Horror Movies That Were WAY Better Than Expected
2. Milk & Serial
Now, nobody could really be blamed for having little-to-no expectations for Milk & Serial - a 62-minute no-budget found footage film from indie filmmaker Curry Barker, which he released straight to his YouTube channel in early 2024.
Understandably, many will question the quality of a film which has, for whatever reason, sidestepped traditional distribution models. And yet, Barker's film became something of a viral word-of-mouth success, and to date has been viewed more than 1.7 million times.
Milk & Serial isn't some viral flavour of the month, it's a genuinely well-crafted horror picture about two social media pranksters - one also played by Barker - whose ever-escalating prank war spins wildly out of control.
Despite its rough-hewn production values, the writing and performances are on-point, Barker wrapping the audience around his finger and refusing to let go for a white-knuckle, often squirm-inducing hour-long romp. YouTube is full of indie horror pictures that get 17 views and are then swallowed up by the algorithm, but Milk & Serial shows that there's also some great free content out there well worth feasting your eyes on.
