10 Recent Horror Movies Which Broke The Fourth Wall To Scare You

Moving to the world of indie short horror films, Storm is a 2023 home invasion thriller that was directed by Lena Tsodykovskaya and stars Tara Raani and Justin Tanks. The project follows a couple, Isabel and Malcolm (Raani and Tanks, respectively) that inexplicably finds themselves trapped in a slasher movie during a stormy night.

Serving as a promising proof of concept, the picture is an inventive and voyeuristic experience that places the viewer in the place of the killer/malevolent entity targeting the unsuspecting lovers. While light on the gore and violence typically found in the genre, it has a palpable atmosphere and quickly builds and releases the tension surrounding the mystery of the intruder.

This is no doubt a by-product of the limited runtime, but this means that the couple, Isabel more so, figures out the familiar machinations (home invasion/haunted house story tropes) in rapid time. Isabel's desperate and angered pleas for the invader to leave her home creates a feeling of unease in the viewer, and this is magnified when the antagonist indirectly causes Malcolm's apparent demise.
