10 Recent Indie Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween
2. Mandy
The second feature from Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) might just be one of the most entrancing and unforgettable horror films of not just the year but the decade.
Nicolas Cage stars as Red Miller, a man whose homestead is attacked by a cult of acid-addled bikers, sending him on a bloody quest for vengeance. Though Cosmatos' film is unquestionably a slow-burn, the beautiful, haunting visuals, incredible musical score (from the late Johann Johannsson) and Cage's intense performance keep it uniformly compelling.
You have to wait until act three for most of the advertised Nic Cage insanity, but they're certainly worth the wait. Where else can you see him have a drunken tantrum in tighty-whities, hoof cocaine off a broken shard of glass and have a chainsaw fight?
It'll be too weird for some, sure, but if you're prepared to dive down the rabbit-hole with Cosmatos and Cage, this is one of the year's most evocative and ambitiously uncompromising films of any kind.
