10 Recent Monster Movies Better Than Godzilla: King Of The Monsters
3. Alien: Covenant (2017)
Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, members of the Covenant discover what they think to be an uncharted paradise. While there, they meet David, the synthetic survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. The mysterious world soon turns dark and dangerous when a hostile alien life-form forces the crew into a deadly fight for survival, but at least they have David on their side - or do they?
Unlike the more recent Alien films, this one is actually scary. There are some truly haunting moments, with creepy architecture. It’s a good blend of science fiction, horror and action. And it succeeds in large part by observing the simplest of formulas: Focus on the aliens, skip the metaphysics.
Thanks to the overall simplification of the storyline, the characters’ motivations are more direct (principally, to stay alive) and the plot twists more keenly honed. Even the culminating revelation, which one can see coming from a mile way, is satisfyingly wicked.
Godzilla is the obvious monster. He’s the towering silhouette on the horizon. What Alien: Covenant does differently is that the threat comes from an unexpected place, proving that not all monsters look like monsters, and that not all monstrous motivations are illogical.
Despite David being a "robot" he is far removed from the cold-blooded titans with whom we share very little in common, or the macho military men hiding behind them, David blurs the lines between good and evil. Whilst Godzilla: King of Titans is exactly what you'd expect (action scene after action scene), Alien: Covenant is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing.
