10 Recent Monster Movies Better Than Godzilla: King Of The Monsters
2. The Predator (2018)
The universe's most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species.
When a boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and an evolutionary biologist can prevent the end of the human race.
As soon as the movie opens, we get introduced to the Predator, and right after that, we meet the hero. And there aren't any awkwardly long cuts or "fancy" slo-mo shots in the midst of the action.
The opening scene details the Predator's landing on Earth, and the shots of the ship crash-landing from space are gorgeous. And the way the director handled the Predator's practical effects, suit and face makes them look threatening and cheesy (in a good way).
Godzilla: King of Monsters was lacking in humor or self awareness - two traits that The Predator certainly doesn't share with it.
Unlike Dr. Emma Russell from Godzilla, the ‘Predator’ threat was taken seriously by all involved – making for more logical reactions along the way. Despite the presence of the ex-soldiers in Predator, we never get that same "pro-troops" message shoved down our throats that is delivered over and over again in Godzilla: King of Monsters.
Visually, Predator also out performs Godzilla, whose monsters were impressively detailed, at least on the occasions you could see them. But that's just it - Godzilla: King of Monsters was filmed so poorly that we hardly glimpse them through the blizzard (a total waste of perfectly good monsters). In Predator you can expect to actually see the predators (in proper lighting!) in all of their stretched-out-jaw glory.
