2. Black Widow - Avengers: Endgame
It was inevitable that at least one of the original Avengers would die in Endgame. Iron Man’s was the most likely, his death infamously emotional but not a seismic surprise. Most die hard fans also predicted that Captain America would go back in time to be with his love Peggy Carter. But Black Widow seemed to have more time on the clock, most people didn’t think that she was at risk of experiencing a heartbreaking death in Endgame.
Yet, in the second act of the highest grossing film of all time, Black Widow died. It was genuinely surprising and deeply controversial due to the nature of her passing.
Natasha Romanoff, a character with a huge history of self worth issues due to trauma, sacrificing herself to gain the final Infinity Stone - since Hawkeye had a family to go back to - still felt dishonest to the character work that had been done with her. She deserved to find peace with her past and view her life with worth, but she was just used as a sacrifice in a scene without the emotional power of Iron Man’s passing.
Regardless of presentation, it was a truly shocking moment realising that our Black Widow was gone.
