Granted, Jane Schoenbrun's new horror film I Saw the TV Glow was an unconventional piece of work from its very first scene, but all the same, that ending wasn't something anyone saw coming.

At the end of the story, we leap forward many years in time, where protagonist Owen (Justice Smith) is now a miserable middle-aged man who works at an adult entertainment center and suffers from debilitating asthma.

While working at a birthday party at the center, Owen has a vocal, public breakdown, and then goes to the bathroom, where he cuts his chest open with a box cutter, revealing a glowing TV inside him, which seems to bring him some measure of comfort.

Owen then returns to the entertainment center's floor, where he apologises to guests for his outburst, none of whom seem to pay him much attention at all, and the film abruptly ends.

The precise meaning of this sequence is very much up for debate - some seeing it as unrelentingly depressing, others viewing it as strangely hopeful - but most will agree it was far from an obvious end-point for the story.
