6. Bird Box (2018)

Buried Ending
Netflix

Based on a 2014 book by Josh Malerman, Bird Box was the movie phenomenon of 2018 and reached levels of popularity that we rarely ever see in the world of film.

Thing is, we're still not entirely sure why Bird Box raced to over forty-five million worldwide views in its opening week. The movie is set in a world similar to ours, however it is quickly overtaken by a swarm of evil supernatural forces who make anyone who looks at them kill themselves. Sandra Bullock plays our lead girl, Malorie as she looks to guide herself and two children to a safehaven away from these entities.

The film is pretty suitably creepy throughout, though it never reaches the point of being genuinely uncomfortable viewing. It's a pretty predictable story for the post-apocalypse genre, though that takes an infuriating nosedive during the film's final act.

Malorie has to take herself and two children down a rocky stream and guide a small boat through some wild rapids. The boat does indeed get destroyed, however not only are the children and Malorie absolutely fine, they hook back up together (still without seeing each other) no problem. This is then repeated again in the middle of a huge, dense forest before closing out at a blind sanctuary filled with fellow survivors. This ending is underwhelming, filled with questions and just a little disappointing.
