10 Recent Movie Shots You Didn't Know Were Accomplished With CGI
1. The Garden - Parasite
Though Bong Joon-ho's masterful thriller Parasite might seem like a relatively practical affair, what with its mere $11 million budget, the director employed some tactful yet deliciously clever VFX wizardry throughout the film.
It's shocking enough that the wealthy Park family's luxurious mansion was actually designed from scratch and built on an open-air Korean soundstage, but there's one especially ingenious shot mid-way through the movie that surely nobody would ever notice.
When Dong-ik (Lee Sun-kyun) is inside his house while talking to his son through a walkie talkie, who is visible in the garden in the same shot, the garden itself is actually a CGI plate that was inserted into the scene later.
As it turned out, the 2018 Korean summer was especially blistering while shooting this scene, and so Don-ik's screen son wouldn't be able to safely perform hours of set-ups for the scene in the boiling heat.
As such, it was decided to shoot the scene with a blue screen patio window, and when the weather had cooled off at the end of the summer, the crew returned, shot the outdoor garden plate and merged the two elements together in post.
Bong put it best himself: "The CGI cost a little bit more but [it was worth it] to protect the child."
